Published news articles about Intellivision and Amico.
]]>Happy Independence Day holiday to everyone in the USA, and we hope everyone else is enjoying a great summer! A lot has happened since our last update on Valentine’s day. The biggest news came in a press release at the end of May about our sale of the Intellivision brand to Atari®️. This deal added the fuel we needed to continue our mission of releasing family friendly Amico games with the goal of eventually delivering Amico consoles. A few important points and outcomes from the Atari deal:
Our company name is changing from Intellivision Entertainment to Amico Entertainment. This is a big process, currently underway, that requires changes across the company infrastructure and products. You may have noticed in the graphic above that our Amico Home logo no longer bears the name “Intellivision”, for example.
We retain the right to develop reimagined Amico versions of games from the classic Intellivision catalog, now under license from Atari.
We retain all Amico hardware IP and patents for Amico controllers, the Amico console, and all aspects of the Amico Home platform.
As our CEO Phil Adam said in the press release, we have every confidence that Atari will be a responsible steward of the storied Intellivision brand. We wish them all the best in that endeavor! We also look forward to our collaboration with Atari to bring a broad array of new Atari and Intellivision titles to the Amico and Amico Home family gaming platforms.

]]>The last 18 months, since becoming the CEO, has been an extremely difficult time for the Intellivision business. A long list of disappointments from both inside and outside of the company had to be taken head on. During this time we laid off a large portion of our staff, restructured our management team, and began the process of reevaluating every aspect of the business, which included the path that lay ahead for Intellivision.
What we have distilled down from countless hours of self assessment is that we are, or more accurately, wish to be, in the business of creating a living room experience that brings people of various ages together in group play. It is the experience between people, sitting in the same room, that will be our primary measure of success. This, first and foremost, comes from offering great content.
As an entertainment business, we realize that creating great content requires world class partners and a focus on strategies where we can effectively achieve the necessary level of excellence to succeed. To this end, we will be announcing a string of new partnerships that will not only help bring fun and innovative content that captures the Amico experience, but also bolsters and celebrates our content's appeal by (1) licensing our IP to development partners who have product pedigrees that are creatively aligned and best poised to bring something great to market, (2) leveraging our IP in ways that ensures delivery on Amico but additionally expands our content to entirely new audiences Intellivision would otherwise be unable to reach and (3) acquiring new IP that embodies Amico and fits our strategic focus. This will include licensing IP for other platforms where it makes sense to do so.
Our commitment to delivering a unique and innovative platform that brings people together has not wavered. What has changed is our philosophy on how to deliver that experience. The business environment is quite different from what it was in 2018 when the original Intellivision business plan was put together. We cannot solely be dependent on a traditional hardware console business model. The cost and time to scale such a business is too great. We must be more creative in how we deploy our intended entertainment experience - not only delivering a better experience for our customers, but also reducing the time and cost to scale the business.
We want to assure our fans that shipping a console remains a part of our product strategy. The development and hands-on testing of our pilot units have been a successful step forward. As a testament of this progress, we are pleased to share with you this video of a father and son playing Shark! Shark! on one of the pilot units in their home!
As part of our expanded strategy, we also plan to bring the Amico experience to other hardware platforms, starting with mobile devices, under the name Amico Home. Amico Home will dramatically reduce the hardware footprint needed to enjoy Amico games and provide more developers the opportunity to explore the creative potential of in-room multiplayer games with our innovative physical and smartphone controllers. This broadening of the talent pool will bring new ideas and gaming that will shape the future of Intellivision and our place in the market.
We are excited for this future and what it means for bringing the Amico experience to the public. Those who supported Intellivision early on helped set the foundation for all that we have been able to achieve, and we are truly thankful to you all. In the coming weeks, those that have maintained a deposit will be able to sign in and verify their spot on the priority list (Amico Club List). The Amico Club List will be used as the primary mechanism to prioritize access to special products, early access to new games and other unique offers. More details to follow.
Again, we thank you for your patience and support as we chart a new course for Intellivision and establish our own unique position in the vast and vibrant video game industry.
Phil Adam, CEO

Intellivision Entertainment Launches with Astrosmash!
•Space-themed, family-friendly, sci-fi game
•Reimagined Intellivision classic from 1981
•Bundled with all Amico gaming consoles
IRVINE, CA – August 31, 2021 – Intellivision Entertainment will launch Amico, its family-friendly gaming console, bundled with games that include Astrosmash, a fun-to-play fan favorite for more than 40 years.
Amico is a new video game system that will redefine family entertainment with a broad variety of family-friendly games free of profanity and violence. Amico – the Italian word for friend – comes with two easy-to-use color touchscreen controllers and gameplay for any skill level so players of all backgrounds may truly enjoy gaming together.
Originally designed by John Sohl and introduced for the original Intellivision console in 1981, the space-themed game has players using a laser cannon to destroy incoming meteors, bombs, and other targets. The original game was hugely successful – it sold more than a million copies and earned a spot as one of the top-5 best-selling Intellivision games of the period – so it was only natural for it to be included with Amico.
Intellivision Entertainment worked with San Francisco-based Rogue Rocket who collaborated together with Intellivision's in-house team to help develop the game. Astrosmash is an Intellivision-owned trademark and original property.
“We reimagined Astrosmash to make it more exciting, more visually appealing, and a bit more challenging without straying from the game’s original theme and gameplay,” announces CEO Tommy Tallarico. “Our new graphics are phenomenal and background music adds excitement to this video game classic. Plus, Astrosmash now allows co-op and versus gameplay for up to four players!”
Every game on Amico encourages group participation and teamwork through "couch co-op" style gameplay, while also offering single-player modes. Games are rated E for Everyone or E10+. There is no foul language, graphic violence, blood, or sexual content. There are no advertisements, downloadable content, loot boxes, or in-game purchases. And, to ensure parental piece-of-mind, Amico does not connect gaming with the Internet. With positive reinforcement parental controls, Intellivision is committed to offering products that parents feel confident about.

]]>INTELLIVISION ENTERTAINMENT™ REVEALS EXCITING NEW LICENSES TO EXPAND ITS DIVERSE PORTFOLIO OF SPORTS THEMED VIDEO GAMES
All-Star Licenses to Include Major League Baseball, Evel Knievel and The American Cornhole League Available Exclusively on Intellivision Amico™
IRVINE, Calif. – July 16, 2020 – Intellivision Entertainment LLC, the video game industry pioneer, announced today several of their latest licensing agreements, which focus on sports-themed games, include Major League Baseball, Evel Knievel, and the American Cornhole League. These partnerships bring additional highly-recognized brands to Intellivision Amico™ through a series of officially licensed games that are simple and fun for the whole family.
“My early memories of playing the original Intellivision Major League Baseball game with my dad and brother helped inspire our vision to launch Amico,” said Intellivision CEO and President, Tommy Tallarico. “Looking to the future, Intellivision is proud to offer a wide breadth of content for everyone in the family to enjoy from favorite sports and recreational games to thrilling, daredevil action. We continue to diversify our portfolio and gameplay experiences for Amico.”
Major League Baseball
The licensing deal between MLB and Intellivision comes 41 years after the two groups launched their first partnership. That historic collaboration represented the first video game license with a professional sports league – a pioneering trend in the industry that Intellivision embraced across almost every sport. Unlike anything available at the time, Intellivision’s Major League Baseball™ game was the first home video game ever to feature spoken voice (e.g. “YER OUT!”). The original Major League Baseball is the best-selling Intellivision game of all time with approximately one in three Intellivision households owning the title. Bringing yet another first to the baseball video game industry, Intellivision’s MLB licensed game will introduce a competitive play option. This option will allow multiple players to join in the fun and set up head-to-head competition in different ways or all versus the computer. All 30 current MLB teams will be featured.
“Baseball video games have brought family and friends together for more than 40 years. Our renewed partnership with Intellivision continues that tradition with simplicity and fun for the whole family,” said Senior Vice President, Games and VR, Jamie Leece. “We look forward to joining Intellivision with the shared mission of bringing family and friends together with the love of the game and passion for our sport.”
Evel Knievel
Paying homage to the Knievel legacy, Intellivision is working with the Evel Knievel Family and Barnstorm Games to bring an exciting multiplayer game to the Amico platform. The updated version of the Evel Knievel game will feature enhanced graphics, sound, and art, plus a variety of multiplayer options utilizing Amico’s unique controllers. In addition to new levels and gameplay features, more action such as the Skycycle X-2 rocket that was used in his infamous Snake River Canyon jump in 1974 will be added.
"My dad was a larger than life character who was a hero and inspiration to millions of people,”’ said Kelly Knievel, son of Evel Knievel. “We are excited to work with Intellivision to keep his legacy alive, introduce his bold spirit to a new generation of fans, and take the thrill of the jump from the arena to the living room on Amico.”
American Cornhole League
Developed exclusively for the Amico system with some of the world’s greatest professional cornhole players, the American Cornhole League, which has been broadcast on ESPN since 2016, is bringing America’s fastest-growing recreational sport into the living room. With the intention of providing a game for everyone in the family, regardless of skill level, users can utilize the unique Amico controller with touchscreen and motion controls. Gameplay is available in career, arcade, multiplayer, or free play mode and features over 100 unlockables, multiple challenges, skill levels and ways to play – no summer BBQ picnic required.
“We are thrilled to work alongside Intellivision and some of the world’s greatest players and to bring cornhole to the Amico console,” said Stacey Moore, Commissioner and Founder of the American Cornhole League. “We cannot wait for people to experience throwing ACL virtual bags in the comfort of their own home.”

]]>INTELLIVISION ENTERTAINMENT ADDS RENOWNED GAME INDUSTRY VETERAN J ALLARD AS GLOBAL MANAGING DIRECTOR
Former Microsoft® Executive and Xbox® Co-Founder Returns to the Video Game Industry to Further Bolster Leadership Team and Launch Intellivision® Amico™ Game Console
IRVINE, Calif. – May 14, 2020 – Intellivision Entertainment, LLC today announced that J Allard has joined Intellivision as Global Managing Director. As Microsoft’s former Chief Experience Officer and Chief Technology Officer of the Entertainment and Devices Division, Allard’s mark and legacy in the games industry stem from two decades at Microsoft in which he co-founded the Xbox, Xbox Live, Live Arcade and Xbox 360 among many other tentpole software products.
“We are thrilled to add such an amazing industry legend to our team,” said Intellivison CEO Tommy Tallarico. “J’s experience, like-minded vision and leadership in the technology and video game industries as a visionary, product designer, and gamer will further strengthen the executive leadership team and innovation legacy at Intellivision.”
A lifelong gamer, Allard grew up with the original Intellivision and published his first game Lemonade Stand in the early 80s for the TRS-80 Color Computer.
Allard was recruited by Microsoft in 1991 and went on to deliver over 40 products, was awarded over 50 patents, and helped build four multi-billion-dollar businesses. He made an impact early on in his career when he wrote a memo titled “Windows: The Next Killer Application on the Internet,” outlining why Microsoft needed to change its course and redefine itself with the Internet. The memo led to Bill Gates – Co-Founder and CEO at the time – to overhaul the company’s strategy and Allard became known as “Microsoft’s Father of the Internet.”
In 1998, Allard co-founded Xbox, ushered Microsoft into the video game console space with the company’s first game console in 2001, and grew the business into the fastest one billion dollar business in the company’s history. Allard was recognized as “Top 35 Entertainment Execs Under 35” by The Hollywood Reporter, “The Most Powerful Men Under 38” by Details, and “The Most Important Person in Video Games” by Giant Bomb.
In his new role at Intellivision Entertainment, Allard will provide invaluable insights to support the final development of Amico – the new console designed to make video gaming accessible to all. His expertise and deep knowledge in user experience, operating systems, game certification, and building ecosystems will help Amico stay true to its mission to bring family and friends together again with fun games that everyone can play.
“Amico’s vision speaks to me, not just because I grew up with Intellivision, but because I grew up playing with my family and friends,” said J Allard. “Playing together is a timeless concept that I feel the video game industry has largely forgotten. The Intellivision team is deeply committed to bringing back shared fun and affordable gaming for everyone.”
Intellivision Amico is planned to release beginning in October and pricing for the system starts at $249. For more information, please visit www.IntellivisionAmico.com.

]]>INTELLIVISION® CELEBRATES ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY
RELEASES INTERACTIVE AR GAME DEMO, UPDATED CONSOLE AND CONTROLLER IMAGES AND VIDEO, FIRST PACK-IN GAME ANNOUNCED, LIST OF GAME DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS, NEW MERCHANDISE AND NEVER BEFORE SEEN LEGACY PROMOTIONAL VIDEO FROM 1978
IRVINE, CA, December 3, 2019 – Intellivision Entertainment is celebrating 40 years of Intellivision by releasing a multitude of news, information, and assets that will give followers a closer glimpse as to what’s to come when the all-new Intellivision Amico console is released on 10/10 2020
It was 40 years ago today that the very first Intellivision video game console hit store shelves. By the early 80's Intellivision owned 20% of the home console market generating over $500 million in yearly revenue with over 1,800 employees worldwide. Intellivision created and pioneered many "firsts" in the game industry that have now become de facto standards including... the first directional pad on a controller (d-pad), the first console to be able to pause a game from the controller, the first spoken voice in a game (Major League Baseball®), the first to license professional sports leagues (NFL®, NBA®, MLB®, PGA®, NHL®, PBA®, etc.), the first digital and subscription based system (PlayCable™ add-on), the first console to also be used as a home computer (Keyboard Component™) and physical music learning device (Intellivision Music Synthesizer™) as well as creating new genres of gaming such as the first "god/city building” and Real Time Strategy with the game Utopia™. Intellivision intends on keeping their legacy of innovation alive with the release of the brand new Intellivision Amico™ family gaming system launching 10/10 2020.
Intellivision CEO Tommy Tallarico stated, "We want to bring the industry back to the core root of gaming. We believe that it is the unique games that are the most important part of any system as well as the talented developers who create them. It's not how fast something can be processed or streamed, it’s not about the complexity of the controls or how realistic the graphics are... but instead, the FUN FACTOR of the games. I feel that sometimes this sentiment and approach has been lost in modern gaming. This is what our brand and the upcoming Intellivision Amico console is focused on. What makes Amico unique is that ALL games will be able to be played with friends and family no matter what the skill level of the player. Each game will have a single player mode, but the most fun will be experienced when playing with others in the same room, which is reflected in our slogan... ‘Together Again’. We're creating something unique, simple and affordable that offers everyone a chance to enjoy gaming entertainment the way it was always and originally meant to be. It’s been said that ‘no news is good news’, we have a different perspective and believe that ‘more news is great news!’
In celebration of the 40th Anniversary, Intellivision has put together a plethora of new information for the upcoming Amico system:
•Updated images and video of the Amico console and controller. After extensive focus group testing, the original Intellivision side buttons have been split apart to function more like shoulder buttons when being played horizontally. This information and much more about the controller can be found in the newest edition of the MEET AMICO video series on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/G2Ij5qFMWuE
•Interactive Augmented Reality app. Allows the user to point the app at any new Amico logo (image below) to see the logo come to life in AR followed by letting the user play a short full screen game demo of Moon Patrol: The Milky Way Chronicles, a new and exclusive reimagining of the Moon Patrol game originally released in 1982 by Irem. •The first of five pack-in games for Amico is being announced along with screen shots comparing the original. ]]>IRVINE, CA, October 22, 2018 – Almost 40 years after the release of the original Intellivision® home video game system which helped to redefine the video game industry, Intellivision® Entertainment is proud to carry on its “Legacy of Firsts” by announcing the brand new revolutionary family home video game console named Amico™ to be released on October 10th, 2020 (1010 2020). Amico is the Italian word for “friend” or “buddy” and encapsulates an element of the approach and dynamics for what makes the new console so unique and an exciting addition to everyone’s family.
“We are creating a console that parents WANT to buy, not that they were asked to buy,” stated Intellivision president and 30 year industry veteran Tommy Tallarico during his keynote address over the weekend at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. Tallarico went on to say, “Most every game being made for the home consoles these days is created with only the hardcore gamer in mind. We see a world where everyone is interested in playing at home and with friends, but this isn’t currently possible because the barrier to entry is nearly impossible for a non-gamer due to the complexity of the controllers, intricacy of gameplay, expense of the hardware and software and steep learning curve with an unbalanced fun factor for the beginner. Our goal was to create a console that both gamers and non-gamers are able to have fun with and play together. The Intellivision Amico is our answer to this gaping hole we see within the current video game industry.”
Intellivision Entertainment continues to build upon its gaming legacy with support and expertise from industry veterans and superstars, including longtime product manager/producer/marketer Jason Enos (involved in over 100 products launches, including the Metal Gear Solid® , Castlevania® , Contra® , Dance Dance Revolution® , Silent Hill® , TEKKEN™, Ace Combat® , Dragon Ball Z® , Monopoly® and PAC-MAN™ franchises), Perrin Kaplan (Zebra Partners, former Nintendo VP of Marketing & Corporate Affairs; launched the Nintendo Wii® , Nintendo DS® , Super Nintendo® , Nintendo Gamecube® , N64® ), Beth Llewlyn (Zebra Partners, former Nintendo PR; launched the Nintendo Wii® , Nintendo DS® , Pokemon™), Scott Tsumura (Tozai Games, formerly co-founder and President of Nintendo Software Technology Corporation, and a pioneer in the early days of arcade game production, including Moon Patrol, Kung Fu Master, 10 Yard Fight, etc.), Phil Adam (Founder of Spectrum Holobyte, President & VP of Interplay Productions, helped introduce Tetris® to the world), André LaMothe (Hardware Evangelist, programmer, designer, author, over 750 products to market, artificial intelligence design for NASA) and advisor David Perry (Earthworm Jim™, Disney’s Aladdin™, founder of Shiny Entertainment and co-founder of Gaikai cloud gaming utilized in the Sony PlayStation®4).
Game industry analyst and Wedbush Securities Managing Director of Equity Research Michael Pachter commented, “I think it’s about time somebody focused on families with kid-friendly games. Intellivision has a long history of delivering content that everybody can enjoy, and with the revived console priced right, I expect it to be immensely successful. The company has the right leadership and is positioned in an underserved niche, I think the re-launch will be a home run.”
"Intellivision Entertainment is also proud to announce that it joins console manufacturers Sony® , Microsoft® and Nintendo® as the fourth game console company to be an active member of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). The ESA's mission is dedicated to serving the business and public affairs needs of the video game industry as well as owning and operating the Electronic Entertainment Exposition (E3)."

Intellivision Entertainment is bringing the concepts of SIMPLE, AFFORDABLE, FAMILY & FUN back into homes across the world with the introduction of their brand new home video game console. The original Intellivision system generated many “firsts” in the video game industry including the first 16-bit gaming machine, the first gaming console to offer digital distribution, the first to bring speech/voice to games, the first to license professional sports leagues and organizations and the first to create and utilize a directional pad (D-Pad) for game controls. Originally released in 1979, due to its popularity it was remarkably retailed across 3 decades and quickly sold millions of units. The new Intellivision system will carry on the company tradition of “firsts” with its new concept, design and approach to gaming.

Originally released in 1979, due to its popularity it was remarkably retailed across 3 decades and quickly sold millions of units. The new Intellivision system (name TBA) will carry on the company tradition of “firsts” with its new concept, design and approach to gaming.
Video Games Live™ creator and 30 year video game industry veteran Tommy Tallarico has been named President of Intellivision Entertainment as the company turns its focus on a rebranding and reimagining for the 21st century while still paying homage to its legacy roots. “I grew up playing Intellivision with my parents and younger brother,” says Tallarico. “It was always my favorite system because the games were cutting edge, yet fun and simple to play so our entire family could enjoy them together. I find those important elements to generally be lacking from our industry with the current modern gaming consoles. Our goal is to change that by focusing on bringing all age groups and levels of gamers and non-gamers together while introducing new generations of people to the legacy success of the Intellivision brand.”
Original Intellivision team members will also play important roles in the creation, development, software and design of the new platform. Intellivision Entertainment Chairman Steve Roney and Intellivision Entertainment Vice President of Technology Bill Fisher have been involved with Intellivision since 1981. Both Steve and Bill were programmers and designers for some of the first home video games to ever have voice/speech (Space Spartans© & B-17 Bomber©). Other Intellivision members include original Game Design & Development Group Leader David Warhol, known for designing and producing over 25 Intellivision titles as well as designing, programming and composing for the first home console video game to ever have wall-to-wall continuous music (Thunder Castle©). Eight year Intellivision veteran and Vice President Emily Reichbach Rosenthal will be heading up the Licensing Division, and longtime Intellivision contractor, tech guru and historian Paul Nurminen has been named Vice President of Product Development.
